The 1901 Census

The 1901 England census is the most recent one for which we have publicly available data. I was able to spend a bit of time with this data in an attempt to find as many Hubbersteys as possible. Here is a summary of some of the interesting data that I found.

Total Entries: 141

Spellings found: Hubberstey(53), Hubbersty(50), Habbersty(2), Hubberstry (5) Habberstey(5), Hubbersley(13), Hubersty (1), and Hubborstey(1). I may have missed a few, but probably not many. Found another - Hubbershey (6) and another Cantrell-Hubbersby (3)

Age Distribution:
10 and Under (34),

11-20 (21),

21-30 (31)
31-40 (15)
41-50 (15)
51-60 (11)
61-70 (9)
71-75 (4)
over 80 (1)

Most Common Names - Male: John (12) William (8) Thomas (7) Robert (7), James (5)

Most Common Names - Female: Mary (15), Ann or Annie (9), Margaret (6)

Lancashire based: 124 out of 141.

Female/Male: 79/62 , or almost 57% female.

Most Common Birthplaces: Preston 50, Blackburn 18, Bolton (6), Broughton (5), Haighton (5)

Hubbersteys by geneological line: Going through the 141 "records" I have been able to separate most of these into specific "lines". There are a few individuals outstanding, but the vast majority have been traced at least somewhat. Here is the breakdown by major line:

Samlesbury line (described in previous posts): 47

John Hubberstey Anne Swarbrick line (may or may not be part of Samlesbury line): 14

Whittingham Line: (to be discussed in future posts) 40 (12 plus 28)

Joannes and Isabella Weaton line: (to be discussed in future posts) 14

Robert and Jane line: (to be discussed in future posts) 11

London line: 4 (see London Calling post)

Wirksworth line: 6 (see Wirksworth post)

All told that is 136 out of 141 connected through 7 lines so far. Hopefully we can trace the rest in as well.
